Ireland VAT Invoice Template

Ireland sets its own rules for what an invoice must contain and how VAT appears on it — including where your vat number has to appear. This template handles both: pick your rate and the lines, the wording and the arithmetic follow.

At a glance

  • Standard VAT rate: 23%, with reduced rates of 13.5% and 9% for specific goods and services.
  • VAT registration is compulsory above €42,500 turnover for services or €85,000 for goods.
  • Mandatory B2B e-invoicing is not yet in force — a PDF remains fully valid until the EU-wide ViDA rollout begins in 2028.

What Revenue Commissioners requires on the document

8 things have to appear before this counts as a valid invoice in Ireland. The one people miss most often is the vat number, which belongs near your business details where an accounts team looks for it.

  • A unique, sequential invoice number
  • The date of issue
  • Your name, address and VAT number
  • The customer's name and address
  • A description of the goods or services, with quantity and unit price
  • The VAT rate applied to each line — shown separately when an invoice mixes rates
  • The VAT amount for each rate
  • The total amount including VAT

Cross-border B2B needs different wording, not a different number

Selling a service to a VAT-registered business in another EU country does not mean charging Irish VAT at a lower rate — it means not charging Irish VAT at all, with specific wording in its place.

  • Put the customer's VAT number on the invoice.
  • Add the notation "reverse charge applies" (or "intra-Community supply of goods" for goods) instead of a VAT line.
  • The customer accounts for VAT themselves in their own country — this is not the same as a zero-rated export.

Charging Irish VAT on a genuine reverse-charge B2B supply is a common and avoidable mistake — it is not simply a different rate, it is a different mechanism.

Invoicing in another currency still needs euro figures

An invoice priced in US dollars or sterling to an overseas client is fine, but Revenue does not accept the foreign amount on its own.

  • The invoice must also show the equivalent in euro.
  • Use the selling rate recorded by the Central Bank at the time the invoice is due to be issued.
  • A different exchange-rate method is only acceptable if Revenue has agreed to it in advance.

Converting at whatever rate your bank happened to use that day is not the same as using the rate Revenue actually expects.

VAT registration and the value thresholds

The rules below only bite past a certain amount, which is what makes them easy to miss — an invoice that was fine last month becomes non-compliant the first time it crosses the line.

  • VAT registration is compulsory once turnover passes €42,500 for services or €85,000 for goods in any rolling 12 months.
  • A non-Irish business with no establishment in Ireland must register from its first taxable supply — there is no threshold.
  • Mandatory B2B e-invoicing is not in force yet — Ireland is phasing it in alongside the EU's ViDA rules, from 2028. A PDF invoice is fully valid until then.

Pick the rate matching what you supply. The generator applies it as a named line, which is how a client's accounts team expects to see it.

Frequently asked questions

What VAT rate should I charge in Ireland?

VAT 23% — standard rate; VAT 13.5% — reduced rate; VAT 9% — second reduced rate; VAT 0% — zero-rated. Choose the one matching what you supply; the generator adds the line and does the arithmetic.

Do I need a vat number to invoice?

You can invoice without one, but you cannot charge VAT without being registered. VAT registration is compulsory once turnover passes €42,500 for services or €85,000 for goods in any rolling 12 months.

Is a PDF invoice valid in Ireland?

Yes. Ireland places no format requirement on an invoice — it must contain the required information, not arrive in a particular file type. Keep a copy for your records for as long as your authority requires.

Can I use this template if I am not registered for VAT in Ireland?

Yes, and you should not show a tax line at all. Charging VAT while unregistered is an offence in most jurisdictions. Pick the "no tax" option and the line is omitted rather than shown as zero, which is a different statement.

Do I have to invoice in EUR if my client is in Ireland?

The generator defaults to EUR for Ireland, which is what a domestic client expects. You can invoice in another currency for an overseas client — just state the currency clearly so there is no ambiguity about what is owed.
