New Zealand GST Invoice Template
New Zealand sets its own rules for what an invoice must contain and how GST appears on it — including where your gst number has to appear. This template handles both: pick your rate and the lines, the wording and the arithmetic follow.
At a glance
- Standard GST rate: 15%.
- No document has to be titled "Tax invoice" since 1 April 2023 — the requirement is for the right information to exist, under any name.
- GST registration is compulsory above $60,000 turnover; full buyer detail is only required on supplies over $1,000.
What Inland Revenue (Te Tari Taake) requires on the document
7 things have to appear before this counts as a valid invoice in New Zealand. The one people miss most often is the gst number, which belongs near your business details where an accounts team looks for it.
- Supplier's name or trade name
- Date of the supply
- A description of the goods or services
- The total amount payable
- Supplier's GST number
- A clear indication of the GST amount included in the price
- Information identifying the buyer (name and address, or NZBN), for supplies over $1,000

Since 1 April 2023, New Zealand replaced the tax invoice requirement with a broader concept called taxable supply information. A lot of guidance and older templates still assume the pre-2023 rule and are now out of date.
- The law no longer requires a document titled "Tax invoice" — what matters is that the required information exists somewhere, on an invoice, a receipt, or even an email confirmation.
- You can keep calling your document a tax invoice if you want; IRD explicitly says you do not have to change the wording of documents you already use.
- What counts as "required information" scales with the value of the supply, not a fixed checklist.
This generator still produces a conventional invoice document, which satisfies the requirement — the nuance only matters if you are relying on older advice that insists the words "Tax invoice" are mandatory. They are not, since 2023.
Registration has two separate triggers, not one
Most countries test registration against turnover alone. New Zealand adds a second, independent trigger that has nothing to do with how much you earn.
- Turnover trigger: $60,000 in the last 12 months, or expected in the next 12 months.
- Pricing trigger: if you add GST to the prices you charge at all, you must register — regardless of turnover.
- Starting a business on its own creates no obligation; IRD is explicit that registering before you need to is a common, avoidable mistake.
GST registration and the value thresholds
The rules below only bite past a certain amount, which is what makes them easy to miss — an invoice that was fine last month becomes non-compliant the first time it crosses the line.
- $200 or less: no taxable supply information needs to be provided at all — both sides just keep their own record of the transaction.
- $200.01 to $1,000: must show the supplier's GST number and a clear indication of the GST included, but not the buyer's details.
- Over $1,000: full detail required, including information identifying the buyer.
- GST registration is compulsory once turnover passes $60,000 in any rolling 12-month period (past or expected).

Pick the rate matching what you supply. The generator applies it as a named line, which is how a client's accounts team expects to see it.
| Applies to | GST | Combined | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard rate | GST 15% | 15% | |
| Zero-rated | GST 0% | 0% | Exports and a small number of other zero-rated supplies. |
| Not registered | No tax line | — | Below the $60,000 registration threshold and not voluntarily registered. |

Frequently asked questions
What GST rate should I charge in New Zealand?
GST 15%; GST 0% — zero-rated. Choose the one matching what you supply; the generator adds the line and does the arithmetic.
Do I need a gst number to invoice?
You can invoice without one, but you cannot charge GST without being registered. GST registration is compulsory once turnover passes $60,000 in any rolling 12-month period (past or expected).
Is a PDF invoice valid in New Zealand?
Yes. New Zealand places no format requirement on an invoice — it must contain the required information, not arrive in a particular file type. Keep a copy for your records for as long as your authority requires.
Can I use this template if I am not registered for GST in New Zealand?
Yes, and you should not show a tax line at all. Charging GST while unregistered is an offence in most jurisdictions. Pick the "no tax" option and the line is omitted rather than shown as zero, which is a different statement.
Do I have to invoice in NZD if my client is in New Zealand?
The generator defaults to NZD for New Zealand, which is what a domestic client expects. You can invoice in another currency for an overseas client — just state the currency clearly so there is no ambiguity about what is owed.
